Derby Women’s Futsal team advance to BUCS Futsal Trophy final

Our Robert Lee reports from Kedleston Road.

Derby Women’s Futsal team are through to the final of the BUCS Futsal Trophy after beating Durham University 6-5 on Saturday afternoon.

Emily Brett’s hat-trick helped to secure a historic victory in a very tight match at Kedleston Road, which did not fail to disappoint.

With five minutes to go in the first half, it seemed all but certain that Derby were going to waltz through to the final with the hosts being 4-1 up.

The goals had been shared well throughout the team, with Maizy Lancashire, captain Eleanor Humphrey and the aforementioned Brett all on the scoresheet.

The mood quickly changed though when Durham scored seconds before the break, bridging the gap to within two.

The visitors’ momentum carried into the second half as they mounted a ferocious comeback, conceding once before firing in three unanswered goals.

It felt like the game would be heading to extra-time only for Brett to bag her third goal and complete her hat-trick with eight minutes left.

Durham came close to an equaliser on a few occasions but their crucial sixth goal continued to evade them, leaving the hosts to move on to the final.

A fantastic performance by Team Derby who will be hoping to go one better and win the BUCS Futsal Trophy on May 11.
