Derby suffer heavy loss against Leicester in Cricket clash

Scott Marnoch reports from the Derbyshire County Cricket Ground

The University of Derby Men’s 1st team played the University of Leicester in a Midlands Tier 2 league cricket match as they fell to a heavy defeat.

University of Derby bowler Callum Hanks thinks it is a “big opportunity” to play at the Derbyshire County Cricket Ground before their match against the University of Leicester.

Hanks added that despite his excitement to get going, he admitted that “there’s always a worry” that the game might get called off as grey skies loomed overhead.

The match did end up being played as the threatening grey skies did not bring any rain, much to everyone’s delight.

Having never played at Derbyshire Cricket Ground previously, Hanks and the rest of his teammates were looking to “use their strengths” to help them utilise the conditions to their advantage.

University of Leicester are a team that got relegated to the Midlands Tier 2 last season and Hanks believes it’ll be a tough test but one he is up for.

Derby started the match bowling and a couple of overs in, they got their first wicket.

Unfortunately for Derby, Leicester’s scoring picked up majorly as they were 92 runs for two wickets after the first 120 balls, after having 36 runs and one wicket after 60 balls.

Leicester ended their innings 294 runs for seven wickets after 300 balls.

At one point it looked like Leicester could have racked up 300 runs, but it was ultimately too high a run count to reach for the visitors.

Derby started their batting innings brightly as they went 52 for one after 36 balls as they chased the massive total set by Leicester.

However, their scoring curtailed as wicket after wicket fell.

Derby ended the game 112 all out as the lower order’s efforts could not prevent the loss.

Derby will be looking to their next fixture against Loughborough Mens 4th as they look to move on from this defeat.
