Gary O’Neil delighted after ending winless run against Luton

Max Stairs reports from Molineux

Wolves Boss Gary O’Neil was over the moon to claim his first win in seven after beating Premier League strugglers Luton Town 2-1 at the Molineux.

Goals from Hwang Hee Chan and Toti Gomes were enough to earn all three points, which puts them in contention for a top half finish.

Despite being winless in seven and suffering FA Cup quarter final heartache to Championship Coventry City, O’Neil claimed that the character shown by his players is what pulled them through the rot.

Both Matheus Cunha and Hwang had excellent performances, with the two players being unable to play together since December due to injury.

O’Neil gave his overarching thoughts on the game and the importance of getting back on track

He said: “I’m pleased with the performance, really, apart from the fact that we didn’t kill it off, and 2-1 probably doesn’t do the game justice.

“Obviously, we were very comfortable at 2-0 and had big chances to make it 3 4 and didn’t take them.”

Wolves have been unfortunate with injuries, losing a lot of their attacking firepower with Pedro Neto, Cunha, and Hwang all being injured in stints over the season.

O’Neil stated the importance of having Cunha and Hwang playing together for the first time since the 4-1 away victory against Brentford on December 27th.

The 40-year-old said: “It was massive, it is huge for this group because we don’t have many attackers.”

“Three or four that you would class as actual attackers, top-line players, probably only Pedro, Chany, and Cunha, that really play on the top line.

“We haven’t been able to name them two since December, as you say and if you go back to trying to name all three of them, we’re all the way back to October.”

O’Neil said Wolves need “More than three points” to secure a top-end finish, which O’Neil added would be a “great end to the season” considering the recent injury crisis amongst the first-team squad.

The Wolves manager will have a job on his hands to get those three points with a trip to Anfield and the Etihad as well as a home tie to an inform Crystal Palace side.
