Everton prevent Foxes from hitting the summit

Report by Chloe Reynolds

Mason Holgate and Richarlison both scored in Everton’s 2-0 win at the King Power Stadium to prevent Leicester City from going to the top of the table.

Carlo Ancelotti made only one change to his side and brought in Robin Olson to replace Jordan Pickford in goal. Leicester were missing Johnny Evans after he received a one match ban for getting five yellow cards this season.

Everton got an early corner and Gylfi Sigurdsson stepped up and found the head of Michael Keane, but it was cleared away by Christian Fuchs.

It was the away side who took the lead as Richarlison cut in from the left and shot right footed into the bottom corner.

Everton continued to create the better chances as Schmeichel was called into action to deny a Dominic Calvert-Lewin header but there was cause for concern when Allen was stretchered off shortly before the break.

Leicester looked the better team at the start of the second half and created two chances, the better one coming for Tielemans who slid it just wide of the goal.

But it was the Toffees who got a second goal in the 70th minute through Holgate. Schmeichel initially made a fantastic save to deny Keane but Everton reacted first, and the ball found Calvert-Lewin who struck the ball against the cross bar. Holgate then pounced on the rebound and tapped the ball in to double their lead.

Leicester pushed hard to find a way back in the game and an Andre Gomes tackle almost resulted in a Foxes penalty, but the decision was overturned by VAR.

The hosts then almost got one back as Vardy headed it into the back of the net past Olson, but the offside flag went up and the Toffees remained 2-0 up.

Everton held on to keep a second consecutive clean sheet and move up to 5th in the table, whilst Leicester drop to fourth.
