Frankie Runham grabs a brace as Chelsea win the Premier League Cup

Written by Joe Booth

It was a dominating defensive performance from Chelsea as they ran out three
one winners over the Wolves at Molineux in the under 17’s Premier league cup.

The Premier League Cup final had been picked to play at Molineux and it was
fitting that Wolves were involved in the final playing on home soil.

In the opening exchanges Chelsea dominated with a series of set pieces,
testing the back three of Wolves, and an early foothold in the game.

Chelsea had won nine trophies during a 16-season period, coming second only
to Manchester United who had 11 at under-17 level.

Wolves’ under-17 team showed excellent passing and dominated possession,
with striker Dani Angel missing a golden opportunity in the Chelsea box when he
was found unmarked, but his first-time effort was blazed over.

Chelsea also had a chance of their own when fullback Genesis Antwi took the
ball from within his half, Antwi beat three Wolves players before clearing the
crossbar from just outside the box.

The away side was pushing for the opener and threatened with every attack
and winger Frankie Runham was seeing much of the ball but was unable to produce
meaningful.

It was Chelsea who stuck first with Rio Ngumoha from a distance into the
bottom corner it was poor closing down by the Wolves midfielders with Ngumoha
being given far too much space on the edge of the area to find his spot.

Early Into the second half, Wolves quickly leveled the score with a shot
from Fraser Harper that wrong-footed the Chelsea keeper Kai Crampton following
a deflection off Saheed Olagunju.

However, Chelsea quickly retook the lead Runham with the goal early in the
second, beating a Wolves player and firing a low shot into the bottom far
corner past Lewys Benjamin in the Wolves’ goal.

Wolves should have drawn level after two good efforts first was Angel trying
the bend the ball from a distance narrowly missing the target and then Conor
Mcleaod’s goal-bound effort was blocked by Olagunju.

Chelsea’s back four had been compact all night and late in the game shown
once again when Olagunju stopped a certain goal following a darting run by
Minkyu Ji.

Chelsea sealed the game minutes from time, and it was Runham’s second of the
match striking low from just outside the box through the body of a Wolves player’s.

Full-time score Wolverhampton
Wanderers 1 Chelsea 3
